BA (Hons) Counselling

The BA (Hons) Counselling programme is for counsellors, healthcare or social care practitioners in professional, part-time or voluntary employment. It is designed to be studied online and consists of two parts detailed below. If you have a degree then you can apply to enter directly into Part 2 of the programme. The programme modules are designed to help you build on your previous studies and facilitate your personal and professional development. Counselling in this context is Person-centred (Rogers), integrated with The Skilled Helper (Egan) and Pastoral Psychology (Gerkin). Counselling is generally a long term therapeutic intervention that has global acceptance. Therefore a qualification at Honours degree level evidences that you have studied the subject at advanced practitioner level.

PROGRAMME

Part 1: For current practitioners that have a diploma qualification they can apply to enrol on the BA Counselling which consists of the following modules: Clinical and Pastoral Counselling, Grief and Bereavement Counselling, Couples and family Counselling and Crisis and trauma Counselling. Cost - £2130

Part 2: For current practitioners that have an appropriate BA or BSc in Counselling they can apply to enrol directly on to the BA (Hons) Counselling which consists of the following modules: Realising opportunities for Professional Development, Processional Organisational Counselling Practice Development, Research Methods for the Work-place and Work-based Honours project. Cost - £2130


PART 1: BA (HONS) COUNSELLING – PART 1.

Module 1: Clinical and Pastoral Counselling (30 Credits)

This module is designed to provide a comprehensive understanding of grief and bereavement processes and to further develop knowledge of in-depth counselling models, approaches and skills in grief and bereavement counselling: which are holistic, practical, and comprehensive and build on the student’s previous knowledge of counselling relationship and self-awareness.

Module 2: Grief and Bereavement Counselling (30 Credits)

This module is designed to provide an understanding of CBT therapy models, processes, skills and practice within the context of a supportive and therapeutic relationship to clients who have addiction issues with the student operating within a professional code of ethics and practice. Emphasis is on gaining new knowledge and developing critical reflection to learn how to further integrate theory and practice to treat clients with various addiction issues within a work based context.

Module 3: Couple and Family Counselling (30 Credits)

This module is designed to provide a comprehensive understanding of couple and family processes emphasising a ‘Systems Approach’ and to further develop a knowledge of in-depth counselling models, approaches and skills in couple and family counselling practice, which are holistic, practical, comprehensive and build on the student’s previous knowledge of the counselling relationship and self-awareness.

Module 4: Crisis and Trauma Counselling (30 Credits)

This module provides a comprehensive knowledge of communication, counselling skills and practice, models and approaches used to help clients who are in crisis or trauma. To help students build a knowledge base of physical and psychological reactions to various forms of abuse and trauma and to develop support and referral networks and to enable the student to convey the depth of professional care and counselling that a client in crisis requires without falling into inappropriate practice.

PART 2: BA (HONS) COUNSELLING

Module 1: Realising Opportunities and Professional Development (20 Credits)

This module will encourage students to plan their career and aspirations , including realistic promotion opportunities and the learning activities that would facilitate attainment of promotion.

Module 2: Professional Organisational Counselling Practice Development (40 Credits)

The content of this module will be determined by the student’s own specific organisational counselling practice development requirements and if appropriate the needs of the organisation. This approach will facilitate the student the opportunity to develop organisational development within counselling practice.

Module 3: Research Methods for the Work Place (20 Credits)

This module seeks to develop the skills and knowledge necessary to understand and apply existing research and to assist students in planning a reliable new research project applicable to their workplace.

Module 4: Work Based Honours Project (40 Credits)

This module allows the practitioner to undertake an in-depth study of a particular area of work activity, and demonstrates a critical understanding of the theory underpinning it. The student is expected to demonstrate an ability to conduct supervised research and produce a written report (10,000 words)
